8 Key Mistakes Made on Resumes Video

Additional Resources:

Not sure where to start in creating a resume?  Microsoft Word has a huge selection of resume formats to pick from.  You can access these by:

1.  Open MS Word and go to "File" and then "New"

2.  Under "New" you will see "suggested searches."

3.  Choose "Resumes and Cover Letters" to view all of the resume templates available.

Here are some resume best practices to help you in picking the resume format that works best for you:

  • Remember that not only should you resume look professional, but it also must be functional to load in to all of the Applicant Tracking Systems.  Stick with a format that is in reverse chronological order, is easy to read, and for the US - one that does not contain a picture.

  • With so much recruiting being done online (electronic job posting systems, LinkedIn, etc.) it is important to think about the key words on your resume.  A good way to know which key words to include is to look at a position you wish to apply for under the requirements section to see what skills are needed.

  • For the skills section of your resume focus more on hard skills than soft competencies.

  • When creating bullets of your accomplishments try to include as many action verbs, metrics and results as possible.  Don't give just a description of the task, but rather what you were able to accomplish and the results for the company.

  • Your resume length should be long enough to cover all of your experience and skills.  Any data you omit from your resume may stop you from coming up in a search.

  • You should take your resume and apply to positions where you are at least a 75% match to the role.

  • You should be prepared to make adjustments on your resume for each position you apply for.  You can make this easier by having a bulleted section at the top of your resume which lists your skills.  Before you apply to a new role, make sure this list has the right skills highlighted for the role you are interested in.

  • Always have a copy of your resume with you on your phone or mobile device that you can send to someone you are meeting with.  The best way to find a job is now and forever will be...through someone you know!

COVER LETTER TIPS

Cover letters can be a great way to highlight some of your key skills and accomplishments to a potential employer.  You can find several different versions to choose from on MS Word following the instructions above.

Many times Cover Letters will not be read word-for-word by employers so be sure to use bullets and bold key text that you wish to draw the attention to.
